This year the girls basketball team stands in a competitive position with six wins and four losses in their Manhattan 2A division. Ms. Trezza, the head coach, wants this team to have a goal this year, and, as she said, “I want them to be committed.”

She is also proud of the students who are returning to compete and are showing great leadership and encouragement to the newer players.

Ms. Trezza said, “They have new players to lead, players who have never played before and are learning from the very beginning. They have not given up yet, even if it’s super overwhelming.”

Senior captain Marangeli Gill has shown she can lead her teammates and motivate them to succeed. Gil said, “I have to be responsible; I have to show them how things are done and just be there for them.” She expects every teammate to be dedicated and open to learning more so that the team can succeed under any outcome.

Senior Jinessa Velasquez, who is a point guard for the team, likes this position, as she can “control the ball” because it helps her “tell people what to do on the court so that we do not look confused while playing.” She is currently still working on perfecting her shooting, especially her “threes.”

Junior Megan Correa started playing basketball during her sophomore year of high school because she wanted to do as many “extracurriculars as possible.” She is showing true commitment to the team this year.

Correa also stated the best advice she had received was to “keep showing up and staying consistent.” She’s maintaining her goal to stay working hard every day.

Ultimately for Ms. Trezza, to have a successful team is to prioritize a good team atmosphere, to have good energy, to spread positivity towards each other, and to be competitive to make it to the playoffs.
