Mariely Cruz is one of the few seniors inside the Pace drama club that has been participating for multiple years. She has experience on stage and back stage, and knows the ins and outs of the drama club. She will be taking part in the drama club’s next production.
This interview has been edited and condensed.
How does the drama club work and what do you guys do? What we do is choose plays, then we perform them in the second semester. Sometimes the Student Government organization lets us volunteer to do shows with them.
What is the rehearsal and audition process like once the show is decided?
After one round of auditions, Mr. Weber, our advisor, assigns us a character. We study the character for two days before the first rehearsal. Then we do a table read and move to the auditorium to block the show.
Where and when are the shows?
The school auditorium is where the shows take place., and the dates can be found on posters around the school once the show is cast.
What is your experience in shows? What roles have you done within Pace’s productions?
I played the Wicked Witch, who’s green, while being on trial in court last year. I didn’t paint myself green though. Also last year, in an SGO-related show, I was a lizard calling to kill another animal. And two years ago I was a soldier interviewing his daughter for the play “Hard Candy.”
What show is the drama club doing this year and what is it about?
This year we are doing the show “How to Get Away With a Murder Mystery” and I don’t really know anything yet, but it’s a parody of the movie “Clue.”
