Senior Allyson Pacheco has been dancing folklorico in honor of her family history and of her Mexican culture since freshman year. She’s been performing on stage at Pace High School’s annual Costume Runway starting her sophomore year. Besides performing in school, she also dances in parades, concerts, and shows.
This interview has been edited and condensed.
How long have you been dancing? And why did you start dancing?
I’ve been dancing folklorico since freshman year. I started dancing because of my family. I felt as if it was a tradition that everybody in my family did, so I grew up and I took the time to get over my fears and learned how to dance.
Do you see yourself doing this in the future, even after college?
Yes, I do see myself doing this in the future because it’s something I love and have passion for. I see myself teaching other kids and presenting my identity culture-wise. So I can prove that we, the Mexican community, are more than just what people usually see.
What’s your least favorite thing about dancing? And what’s your favorite thing?
My least favorite thing is learning the steps and getting tired, my arms being sore, and my legs being sore. My favorite thing is when we’re getting ready to perform and giving it our all.

How are you preparing for the Costume Runway?
I’m trying to do something new for Costume Runway. So I’m learning new steps and doing a new song and a new style of dancing.
How has Pace helped you develop your skills?
Pace has helped me show my background to different people with different backgrounds, and to not be shy to do something.
