Sudan is a country that is suffering from a humanitarian crisis. It is a civil war between two rival factions of the military government. It began on April 15, 2023 and is still ongoing.
The civil war caused displacement within Sudan. Approximately 8.8 million citizens are internally displaced and 3.5 million are seeking refuge in neighboring countries. It has also led to food scarcity.
Mariella Vargez, a senior, said, “I didn’t know about this, my heart goes out to the people. I hope the government can help them, considering the displacement can affect NYC.”
The two opponent factions consist of the Sudanese armed forces which are under Abdel Fattah al-Burgas and the Paramilitary Rapid Support forces and its allies.
On March 21, the Sudanese military secured a major victory by recapturing the capital. In early April, it was noted how Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (the RSF) ambushed and attacked a group of refugee camps, killing 300 people.
The conflict in Sudan isn’t getting a lot of attention and students at Pace don’t know much about it.
“It’s unfortunate,” said Mr. Rothschild, physics and math special-ed teacher. “So many domestic issues coming from different areas inundate our brain. If our country was in a more stable place, I think we would be more informed.”
Senior, Maimouna Sissiko, is aware of the situation in Sudan, but realizes most Americans don’t know about it.
“It’s crazy considering there’s a lot of violence and chaos happening in Africa currently,” she said. “Another country that is going through conflict is the Congo. It bothers me how many countries in Africa are suffering.”
