Drama Club presented “Fairytale Courtroom” on Feb. 13. It was a show that took me back to the stories I heard as a child.
“Fairytale Courtroom” had two acts revolving around justice from familiar childhood stories of the brothers Grimm and the “Wizard of Oz.”
This play was interactive and hilarious since the Big Bad Wolf and the Wicked Witch attempted to defend themselves against a lineup of famous accusers, from Little Red Riding Hood to the Three Little Pigs.
The first act was a court ruling, putting the wolf on trial for his crimes against the townspeople. Erick Drayton starred as the wolf and put on a show of deceit. He almost convinced me that the wolf was a good person and should be found not guilty of deceiving Little Red Riding Hood or attempting to demolish the three little piggies’ houses.
The actor made it hard not to sympathize or even laugh at times. It brought up the rising question: are these ‘villains’ truly guilty or just misunderstood?
The second act was another court case but for the Wicked Witch. The actor displayed faces of disgust and discontent while being there. The actor playing the Wicked Witch fully embraced the role, delivering a performance that was both delightfully wicked and surprisingly persuasive. What made her performance stand out was her ability to flip the narrative. Despite her wicked exterior, she argued her case with such conviction and charm that she almost had the audience second-guessing her guilt.
The entire cast truly brought their characters to life, using big expressions, dramatic reactions, and well-timed comedy to keep the audience engaged. Even when actors forgot a few lines, they never broke character, pushing through with quick improvisation and natural chemistry. Their ability to roll with the moment only added to the humor, making each unexpected pause or mix-up feel like part of the fun.
Every actor gave it their all, fully committing to their roles and making even the smallest moments feel big. Even with only a few people in the seats, the cast never let the energy drop, ensuring every laugh, dramatic moment, and interactive element still landed.
This was Drama Club’s first play of the school year. They have been a bit delayed in performances, but they made sure this play was put on with heart and soul.
