Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
One of the most anticipated albums of the year, “$ome $exy $ongs 4 U” by Drake and PartyNextDoor, has recently dropped. After Drake's hate train and PartyNextDoor’s highly rated album that dropped in 2024, the general public was yearning for their collab album to release.
Following Drake’s linguistic beatdown from Kendrick Lamar, whose “Not Like Us” diss received five Grammy nominations and was broadcasted on more than 120 million screens during his feud-ending Super Bowl LIX halftime show, Drake is looking to pick up his momentum.
PND and Drake have lived up to their audience’s expectations as their sensual R&B-infused experience justifiably dominates the radio, despite all the chaos we’ve seen unfold over the past year, which isn't entirely ignored in this project.
The 21-track project spans over 73 minutes and features multiple team efforts, both artist individual endeavors, as well as some significant input from a few surprising guests such as Pim, Yebba and Chino Pacas. The album was a fusion of R&B, pop, hip-hop, and rap. The rappers went back to their Toronto roots, paying homage to the iconic CN tower, opening their album with their track:“CN Tower.” The album’s mood is characterized by its focus on the themes of love, relationships, and emotional vulnerability, aligning with the Valentine's Day release date.
With their soothing vibes and catchy hooks, the album’s opening three tracks “CN Tower,” “Moth Balls,” and "Something About You” set the tone right away and have listeners feeling wonderful.
“Meet Your Padre” is a very unique track in collaboration with Chino Pacas that includes a shocking change in lyrics. Many listeners dislike the song due to its uncomfortable and cringey feeling of PND and Drake speaking in “Spang-lish.” However, it is the most underrated track on the album because of its cultural blend and emotional lyrics that make the audience get deja vu regarding past relationships.
With two noteworthy mentions, the track “Nokia” gives the viewer a mellow and chill vibe which Drake fans love to see while listening to his discography. “Die Trying” carries more intense energy while leaving fans with the motivation to face their challenges. These two tracks are favored by the public due to being the most streamed tracks of the album.
The best song on this album has to be “Gimme a Hug” with its amazing beat switch and talk on Drake’s rivals in the music industry. Drake opens the track with the line,” Yeah, Drake elimination, fake intimidation,” meaning he is calling Lamar fake. Later on, Drake says, “F**k a rap beef, I'm tryna get the party lit.” In this track, he points out that he gives little care to the matter and expresses his desire to move on.
This album was a unique listening experience, to say the least. Between PND and Drake's romantic lyrics, to Drake’s clapback towards Kendrick Lamar. This album deserves to be recognized as one of the best albums of the year.
