Imagine someone asking you what your favorite show is and you respond, “You.” Some might be confused but others would immediately know that that person is clearly talking about the Netflix series.
“You” is a psychological thriller television series based on books by Caroline Kepnes. The Netflix series is about a man named Joe played by Penn Badgley. Joe is very charming but obsessive, manipulative and psychopathic.
Joe stops at nothing to get the women he has been so addicted to, he doesn’t even care to take away people’s lives as long as he gets who and what he wants.
There are four seasons. The plot seems repetitive and like an ongoing thing. I have watched all five seasons and just started recently rewatching the show from the beginning. I find that every time I rewatch a show, I learn something new that I missed the first time.
“You” is just one of those shows. Watching the show “You” it is easy to miss things that matter and make the line of events make sense. Netflix has announced that there is going to be a final season in 2025.
The seasons and show overall makes the plot seem very repetitive due to in every season Joe Goldberg the main character obsesses over multiple females and has an ongoing problem of stalking and following them.
Part of Joe Goldberg’s sickness and obsession is that he went through a lot in his childhood and has trauma from it. Throughout the series multiple flashbacks come up showing Joe as a little boy relating to real life experiences he goes through with women involved. Joe blames the way he is on the way he grew up. He says he has “mommy issues.” Joe went through a lot of childhood trauma and has had a constant thing with abandonment since he was young. Joe moves from group home to group home and he witnesses disturbing things that a kid should not witness like abuse.
The way Joe narrates the show is interesting. The flashbacks of him as a child come up very often, in almost every episode. Every time Joe does a terrible thing he always falls back to tell himself that he left his crazy obsessive habits behind him, but in reality it is an ongoing cycle that never ends throughout the show.
Joe has said he wanted to start over so many times. He goes as far as moving away and meeting new people, however trouble seems to always find him again. “You” is a great show. It is a amazing show and It has very deep aspects of it and themes like suicide, abuse, mental health, obsession and etc. Once I understood the concept, I could rewatch the show over and over again.
