There is no end to where education or where being a storyteller can take you.
Student journalists are refined writers and speakers. This is due to the high writing and interview content of their work. The demands of these skills provide the verbal, critical thinking, and writing abilities that allow them to be qualified in all fields. Journalists know how to thoroughly explain and question those of correspondence. Journalists are also good at keeping up with changes in technology and recording new statistics.
Many opportunities arise in the world of journalism. Press Pass NYC’s founder and current leader, Lara Bergen, said, “I feel like journalism is a kind of service that journalists do for people who don’t have time or access to information that will be helpful to them.”
Scientists study and explain the natural state of our world, while journalists document the social aspects of the same world. Like any journalist, scientists keep up with the ever-changing conditions of the world.
Journalists are investigators, discoverers and documenters. They are equipped to fulfill any job, including scientific study. Additionally, journalism isn’t only writing. There are multiple types of journalism, like photojournalism and data journalism. Each contains its unique characteristics that cohesively have a sole purpose of serving correct and easily accessible information to the public.
Unfortunately, journalism as a whole has been put under a common misconception that you need to be a good writer, but anyone can become a journalist. Senior journalist Kyara Asitimbay, said, “I entered [journalism] my sophomore year. I learned different forms of writing and how to write in a journalism matter through the elective. I developed writing skills.”
During Kyara Asitimbay’s three years in the journalism class, she learned multiple things about herself, like using journalism as a creative outlet, but also what she wanted to do in her future. As she displays interest in pursuing a job in the journalism field, she gives thanks to what Pace High School’s journalism class taught her.
But for students who are passionate about data analytics, helping their community, or just talking with people, Bergen recommends that everyone try the student newspaper at their future college. “I think also doing journalism in college is a great service to the community and it’s a really important part of the journalism ecosystem right now,” she emphasizes.
Journalism can keep students centered and well-educated about what is happening locally and all over the world. It is important to remember that journalism creates a community where people in nearby neighborhoods can read to get notified of new information. That is why we should introduce journalism in elementary school. Creativity and finding out future aspirations go hand in hand throughout people’s adolescence, although you may want to follow your own creative paths. It is natural to feel pressure to continue on a more substantial path.
“Well, I think journalism, news articles, video and photos are great teaching tools that can be integrated into the curriculum from elementary school on and identify as this is journalism,” Bergen said.
Like many people, Bergen believes journalism serves many ideas, and that it is impossible for a single journalism publication to be one-sided, with millions of writers and each with a unique voice. Journalism is a type of writing that uses the narrator’s voice. Journalism not only keeps kids centered but keeps our world running and continuing to share narratives from around the world.
