Angelo Rodriguez is a hardworking custodian of Pace’s building. He has been working here for 37 years and he explains his take on his job experience.
This interview has been edited and condensed.
What’s your job at Pace? Can you describe what you do?
What I do is go on the roof in the morning, turn on the air units for the building. I have to do logs about the things that’s happening in the building. [I] do repairs that I need to do because there’s always something broken in the building.
Do you like your job? Why or why not?
This is all right. I mean, it’s okay. It’s not the greatest job, but you know, it pays the bills.
Why did you choose this job?
Well I have to, like I said I pay bills, children. I have to feed them, you know?
How long have you been working here?
I’ve been here at least 37 years.
What has been the best or worst thing you’ve seen?
The best thing I guess is dedication all over the walls, the floor, everywhere.
What’s important about your role or job at Pace? Do you think students know about your job why or why not?
I keep the place clean, help clean the air to make it better in the school. When it’s hot, I fix the heat system. I got it cut on. When it’s cold, I have to fix the air conditioning.
Was this job always your choice?
Well, for me it pays well, that’s why.
Did you have another job before coming to Pace?
Yes. I was also working in the school system, proctoring tests.
