Fatoumata Drame, a senior, has a special love for all things engineering and showcases it through many fun and unique activities. Drame’s endeavor into engineering shows not only her personal journey, but her dedication towards the future. She is hoping to make a difference in the world of technology.
Drame said, “I see engineering in my future; it’s a very interesting field, and I plan on majoring in civil engineering in college”
She enjoys the technical aspects of engineering. She thinks it’s interesting how both technical and creative work together in such a field. She always enjoyed both science and math; using these subjects to create new solutions in various areas of the world is unmatched.
She also states, “Engineering is really important. In all honesty, there is an aspect of engineering for almost everything in the world, whether it be medical, chemical, civil, or mechanical. Engineers create everything you see around you, including the infrastructure in cities all over the world like those in New York. I feel that engineering is something that is always needed by everyone because of all the work and research they can do!”
She emphasizes the fact that engineers can find many solutions for issues that are presently seen in the world, making them a vital field of career.
Drame isn’t a stranger to the field of engineering and has had some prior experience, and in this case, that would be an engineering program that made her discover her love for the subject.
“For instance, I took a Cooper Union Stem Saturday class, and I got to do all types of fun hands-on activities with other high school students. It made engineering look fun! I also was a part of the Ace Mentor program and that was also really important for me in deciding on civil engineering, specifically because you get to meet with engineers of different branches. So, I was able to learn about different branches of engineering like mechanical, civil, and structural. From there, I ultimately focused on civil engineering and was able to do a project and see the actual work these specific engineers got to do on a daily basis!”
By attending these programs over the summer, she also learned more about sustainable engineering. She emphasizes that “it’s important for engineers to work on solutions for climate change. In the program, I was able to do a lot of research on renewable energies and materials.”
Drame didn’t just go to these programs, but she established and founded the engineering club as well! Drame states that she wanted to start the tech and engineering club at Pace due to the fact of an undying interest. “I really wished my school had a club where students could get together and share that same passion for engineering, and so since I didn’t have it at Pace, I wanted to be the one to create it. By having this club, it encourages more people at our school to get into STEM fields, not just engineering. I want to make it a place where more people could be exposed to the subject.”
