This interview has been edited and condensed.
What is your job at Pace?
Technically my job is the dean, which is part of behavior and also helping the assistant principals with behavior. I’m an assistant coach for the boys basketball team and also strength-and-conditioning coach for both boys and girls sports.
What are your goals for your team this season?
Well, the goal for this year’s team is to help them mature because we have a lot of young players. We only have, I believe, three seniors that’s actually playing or returning players and we’re in the process of rebuilding, which means that we’re trying to get better as the year goes on.
How do you prioritize skill development versus winning games?
Skill development is a process and it happens to practice and off season workouts and it is always through each day trying to help individuals get better.
What does a typical practice look like?
Preseason practice really is different from the actual in season practice. Preseason practice really deals with conditioning, cleaning, running, and getting stronger; [like using the] weight room and also conditioning your mind.
What are your expectations for players in terms of commitment and attendance?
Well most of the kids are interested in playing the next level, which is college. Many of them don’t have the fortitude or maturity to play at that level. Now we [are] actually in the process of trying to see if those particular kids are college ready and it’s our job to get them there.
What do you consider a successful season for your team?
At this point, probably the playoffs would be a successful season. Which means for us to win over more than half of our games.
