“Hard Candy,” by Jonathan Rand and presented by the drama club is about an array of interviews where the characters alternate between the interviewer and the interviewee. Essentially, it’s about what’s not supposed to happen during an interview. There is a play on words from the title throughout the play, with a bunch of characters offering each other hard candy from a bowl.
The play begins in an office setting. We can see the secretary, the first interviewer and the boss. It starts off with a mediocre football player who may have peaked in high school, and gets along quite well with the boss.
Hard candy is a very light-hearted, ironic and comical play. The actors did a great job at portraying this concept and making sure the audience was well-engaged.
A favorite scene was when secretary Linda, was fed-up with being constantly mistreated and one of the interviewers choked on their hard candies. It had the perfect amount of dark humor and irony.
Behind the scenes, theater teacher and club director Mr. Weber took control of the lights and other aspects of the show.
My favorite actors were Erick Drayton, Rei Dharamraj and Paige Gabler. They did a really great job at bringing the play’s concept to life.
There were random fake kissing segments throughout the act. It felt very awkward between the actors and the audience, as it caused a lot of people to be shocked and taken aback. There were still a few laughs within the crowd though, so some people must have enjoyed it.
All actors and actresses who were in this play should be very proud of themselves. A good ole pat on the back to everybody because coming together and making a successful production can take blood, sweat and tears. Additionally, the Drama club performing different genres, particularly a film noir, would be fun.
